Paint Cost Calculator
Cost of paint plus professional labour for a room, so you can see what hiring it out actually adds.
The surprise in every painting quote is how little of it is paint. A 14 by 12 foot room with nine foot walls has around 430 square feet of wall, which is roughly three gallons for two coats — under 150 dollars of material on a job that a professional will quote at well over a thousand.
That gap is why the decision to paint a room yourself is really a decision about your own time. Labour is the line that moves the total, and it moves with ceiling height, the number of coats, how much furniture has to be moved, and whether the walls need filling and sanding before anything goes on.
How this calculator works
Every field is editable and the result updates as you type — nothing is submitted anywhere, all the maths runs in your browser. That matters for a number you are about to spend money on: you can see exactly which input moved the answer, and by how much.
What this calculation assumes
Assumes walls only, at one standard coat thickness, on previously painted surfaces. Ceilings, trim, doors, primer and any filling or sanding are excluded, and those are usually where a real quote grows.
Treat the result as an order-of-magnitude check rather than a final quantity. Product packaging changes, regional labour rates vary by a factor of two, and no calculator has seen your actual site.
Frequently asked questions
Why is labour so much of the cost?
Because prep and cutting in take longer than rolling. Masking, filling, sanding and cutting a clean line along ceilings and trim is most of the job; the rolling itself is fast. Any quote that looks unusually cheap usually has a thin prep line, and that shows up as peeling or flashing within a year.
Does a colour change cost more?
Yes, often 20 to 30% more. Going from dark to light needs a primer or extra coat to stop the old colour reading through, and strong reds, yellows and oranges can need three or four coats regardless of the paint quality. Budget an extra coat for any large shift in value.
Should I include the ceiling?
This calculator covers walls only. Ceilings add roughly the floor area again, so on this room about 168 square feet, plus the effort of working overhead. Many painters charge ceilings at a higher rate per square foot for exactly that reason.
